Putting The Superego In The Back Seat
What guides you when you stop obeying the rules you never chose?
The superego is a real but artificial structure. It is assembled by the collective — a comprehensive set of rules necessary to keep society functioning as a society. In that sense, it is the traditional seat of morality. But what is morality, actually? At its core, it is conformity to a set of agreed-upon societal rules that everyone needs you to follow. Violate them, and you are accused of being immoral.
But what does that have to do with vibrational truth? Actually, nothing.
Obviously, we don't want people walking around killing each other. Yet that still happens. Clearly, the superego hasn't solved it.
But its original purpose was simpler:, a survival strategy, a psychic superstructure to keep enough people in line for society to function. For a long time, that was the best available tool. The question now is whether there is something more true available to guide us, not a collective constraint imposed from without, but an inner signal arising from within.
The Conscience Question
Collectively, most people have not been able to connect to inner guidance, a direct, felt sense of what is right and what isn't. Some call this a conscience, and at its best, that is precisely what it is. But the word requires clarification, because what passes for conscience in most people is often the internalized voice of the superego: guilt and shame dressed in moral clothing.
The difference matters, and you can feel it in your body.
| Superego-Conscience | True Self Conscience |
|---|---|
| Arrives as a rule or command | Arrives as a felt sense, a quiet knowing |
| Carries guilt, shame, and shoulds | Carries clarity, sometimes grief or remorse, never shame |
| Feels like pressure from outside | Feels like something rising from within |
| Demands compliance, not understanding | Invites alignment, not obedience |
| Punishes after the fact | Guides before, never punishes after |
| Contracted, heavy, anxious | Open, loving, present, alive |
Superego conscience sounds like: You should. You must. You'll be judged if you don't. True Self conscience feels more like a harmonious signal, something in you that simply knows when you are in tune and when you are not. Not as a verdict, but as essential information, as feedback.
The Harmony in You
There is something in us that knows harmony. At our core we are designed to be an instrument, beautifully attuned, in alignment with all there is. As such, we have an inner sense when something is out of alignment with that harmony. We know the signal, mainly because it simply does not feel good.
What feels better? Several cellos playing a beautiful piece together, or the same players each doing their own thing? One is harmony. The other is cacophony. It is what happens when there is no alignment with the whole.
When we can feel our alignment with harmony, we clearly know when we're in tune and when we're not. That felt knowing is what is intended to guide our actions. Not a rulebook handed down by the collective. Not shame. Not fear of judgment. An inner signal that is available to everyone, though not everyone has yet learned to listen to and trust it.
The thing is, when we are in alignment with the Source of harmony, it doesn't simply feel good. Alignment becomes generative. Good things don't just happen in our lives, they flow through our lives, and in doing so, benefit others.
As one connects to their inner signal, the superego is not abolished. It is superseded, the way training wheels are superseded, not thrown away in disgust, but outgrown.
The Orchestra
Imagine a world where everyone is attuned to their guidance, to know the truth for themselves, which is to say, their part in the whole. They are not operating independently. They are operating interdependently. Just like multiple musicians in an orchestra: each experiencing the joy of playing their part, each aligning to the same piece of music, each contributing to the beauty of the entirety and expressing it. Imagine what this world feels like.
That is next level. That is not where humanity has been. But this is now available to us. And those of us who resonate with these words are on the leading edge of the emergence of this capacity, with the potential for all of humanity to realize this.
People need to see embodied examples of this. This is where you come in. The more of us who operate this way, the more it enables others to do the same. That is both modeling and sympathetic resonance. And over time it is enough to shift the totality.
The Superego's Obsolescence, and Its Limits
For those who attune, the superego is no longer required. It was an artificial constraint placed over the psyche to keep society in line. A necessary evolutionary step. But for many it has become a source of guilt, a source of shame, a source of shoulds, a self-perpetuating loop that keeps itself alive precisely by manufacturing the feeling that you have violated something. The superego is, at this stage of development, largely self-serving. It is disconnected from the whole.
The superego was never a natural part of us. It is collective conditioning, an external intergenerational patterning absorbed over a lifetime. As such, it has no permanent claim. As we come into our true nature and begin flowing with the Tao, that conditioning loosens its grip. We don't need to fight or dismantle it by force. We simply let the patterning go.
This does not mean the superego is obsolete for all of humanity right now. It still does real work for people who have not yet developed the capacity for inner harmonic guidance. The key is, as you stabilize in attunement with that inner signal, it carries a higher precedence than the superego. You found something more reliable, more alive, and more true. The training wheels are simply outgrown and put away.
How to Begin
Start to pay attention. Feel your way through life. Notice when something feels in alignment for you, and when something doesn't. Act accordingly. Go with what feels in alignment.
It will probably bring you face to face with whatever aspects of the superego you have internalized. And we have all internalized it, because we are part of the collective. The overlay is real, and it runs deep, both neurologically and psychologically. But once you wake up and pay attention inwardly, you find the actual guidance, the signal beneath the noise. And then when your actions feel right, they are in harmony with the whole. And things flow. This is what is meant by flowing with the Tao.
Follow the energy. The energy is intelligent and knows what it is doing. The energy contains a total understanding of the totality, and your part in it. When you act from this place, it comes from joy, it is the life force in motion. It has the vibrational truth behind it. And you are then given everything you need to carry out that which you know is yours to do.
This is the way it works. Consider this.
Living It, Not Just Reading It
Reading about the inner signal is one thing. Embodying it is another. It helps to have living examples of people actually navigating from this place. That is part of how this spreads: by resonance.
If you want support in stabilizing your own inner signal, through coaching, guided work, satsang, or further explorations, you'll find it at Applied Wisdom. And if this piece moved something in you, please pass it along. That's the resonance doing its work.
